Hi there!
I did have a question for you guys about your choice of venue this year. Why the Indiana Convention Center? I live in central IN and I know the ICC is a pretty nice venue, but I've also heard it's pretty expensive to host things there. Why choose such a location for a new convention?
Also, are you concerned at all about competing against other conventions in the area? I'm not sure if you're aware, but Indy is hosting something like a dozen geek-themed cons next year, including a number of other newcomers. Some of the cons are fairly small (Indiana Comic Con, Pop Con) but others are pretty heavy hitters, like Wizard World and the long-established Gen Con. I've also heard Awesome Con is going to be a pretty big deal-- their first convention is happening in a few weeks, and although they're new to Indy, they seem to be bringing in a lot of big names, including three stars from Firefly.
How do you plan to distinguish yourself and compete against all these other events?

We apologize, as we cannot answer any questions about Dashcon, however, one of the co-owners of both Emoti-con Indy and Dashcon recently wrote a post which might help provide some of the information you are looking for here!We discussed and agreed that we will distinguish ourselves by building a convention around the interests of our attendees, and encourage a larger format for the discussions of pop culture they already engage each other in through social media. Rather than focusing on how our favorite additions to pop culture are made, we will enable attendees to critique how well they were made, and learn how to make them ourselves.

I'm a little confused. I didn't ask any questions about DashCon. I was simply curious what attracted you to host your event in Indianapolis.
I'm glad that you are focused on catering the convention to the interests of your attendees, however I'm still not quite clear on how you plan to distinguish yourselves among so many other events. Indy PopCon and Awesome Con are both focused on internet culture and pop culture. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to attend panels at Indy PopCon, and AwesomeCon has yet to debut, but I believe critical discussion of media is a common topic at many conventions. While I realize you are probably still planning out most of your panels and events at this point in time, I ask again: how do you plan to make Emoti-Con stand out from these other events?

Hi there! Apologies for the late reply. For clarification, the reason that we are hosting our event in the Indianapolis Convention Center is explained in this post, and further in this post and again in this post.To answer your question about how we plan to make Emoti-Con stand out; While most conventions might feature panels about popular topics featuring topics of discussion that don't necessarily relate to the attendees, we want our attendees to make the discussions theirs. Many of our panels will be set up to talk about topics as we experience them daily, and to cover skills that can be used on a more frequent basis. This can include any topic ranging from fandom, to discussions of how different social media websites have changed over the years, or to talking about the best way to set up an affordable garden in a small apartment. This is where you all come in! By going to submit a panel here, our attendees can help us bring all topics of interest to the convention, not just ones that we think of! By doing this, we hope to make our panels more accessible to the attendees. We don't want to just do cool stuff in the panels, we want you to do cool stuff with us!

How the heck does gardening have anything to do with a social media/pop culture convention? That makes no sense. A pop culture / social media convention doesn't exactly mesh with taking care of plants. Generally panels at a con all fall under a specific topic, even if they focus on different things. With a con like the one you are putting together, it makes more sense to focus on fandoms and the pop culture aspects within said fandoms.
